The Problem
Pleavin Power were contacted by the global shipping organisation after they had suffered from prime power failure whilst at sea, we arranged for our reactive response team to meet with the ship as it came into port to immediately commence an investigation and identify the route cause of the issues. We found heavy mechanical damage to the PMG rotor and stator after the PMG stator had come loose during operation, after completing further tests we also identified the machine was in desperate need of a mechanical and electrical overhaul before it could operate again.
The Solution
With overhaul out of the question due to tide times and shipping arrangements the client gave us a window of 72hrs to not only provide a solution but have the machine operational and ready to sail. After installing a different style of AVR to allow the generator to operate without the PMG we struggled with voltage control due to the resistance within the exciter so the decision was made to remove, rewind & re-install it within 24hrs. The team pulled together stripped the machine and had the Exciter in the oven that night before returning to reassemble, test and commission the generator with an hour to spare, fortunately, the client’s ship left the dock at noon Friday as planned.
